The film follows a group of young adults in New York City who are navigating love and relationships. Alice (Dakota Johnson) is a young woman who has just broken up with her long-term boyfriend and moves to New York City to start fresh. She is befriended by her co-worker Robin (Rebel Wilson), who is a free spirit who enjoys the single life. Robin takes Alice under her wing and teaches her how to enjoy being single.
The film also follows the stories of Alice's sister Meg (Leslie Mann), who is a successful doctor who is looking for love, and their friend Lucy (Alison Brie), who is a serial dater. Through their experiences, the women learn about themselves and what they want in life.
